Project Description

  • For our second lesson, we will be doing the same activity but this time we will be with first graders! We are still following their class theme of "art tells stories" by creating self portraits using paper plates and found materials in order to represent themselves.

Essential Understandings

  • The essential understanding of this lesson is that students will be able to demonstrate the relationship between self portraits and storytelling through the use of different materials.

Objectives

Identify how artists and designers make connections through personal stories between self, family and friends.

  • Observe and Learn to Comprehend, GLE 1: Identify how artists use visual art and design to communicate, SHoM: Stretch & Explore, Art Learning: Artists use layers of experiences to develop personal insight that can be shared.

Investigate the properties of materials (found objects) to support the planning and making of works of art to communicate.

  • Invent and Discover to Create, GLE 3: Invent and Discover to Create, SHoM: Engage and Persist, Art Learning: Art shares stories

Art methods

  • collage

Art Vocabulary

  • collage, portrait, self portrait, representation

Materials

Documentation

  • Here are some examples from this class, the students were very excited about this project and were able to choose things (Colors and objects) that were able to represent themselves. The students were very good about considering shapes and colors when deciding on materials for their self portraits.

This student layered buttons and gems to create "pupils" for her eyes and rainbow puff balls for her smile.

This student used flowers to represent her hair and a noodle to represent her smile.

This student used puff balls and buttons to represent their ears and foam stickers to make a smile.

Students working together to create their self portraits.

This student layered flowers on top of crumpled tissue paper to represent the flowers she had in her hair. She also used triangle foam stickers to represent her eyelashes.

This student used a piece of tissue paper to represent his mask and pink foam stickers to represent his rosy cheeks.

This student used buttons to represent his ears and gems to represent "happy tears."

This student layered gems to stick out from the plate like how her nose sticks out from her face.

This student showed his love for macaroni by creating a mouth from foam stickers that is "eating" macaroni noodles.

This student created her pony tail from various materials (gems, buttons, foam stickers, flowers, noodles, etc) and eyebrows from cut cardboard.

This student chose to represent her cheeks by layering flowers and puff balls and created her hair from feathers and a button to represent the clip in her hair.

This student chose to represent his blond hair and big smile using noodles.

This student layered cardboard on top of a feather to make his lips and used a big puff ball for his nose.
